The popular and versatile guitars originated from a musical instrument of Spanish origin. The vihuela, as it was called, originated by means of two other instruments even older: the "ud", with five strings and very popular in the Middle East, and the "cozba", a Roman musical device.

Electric guitars appeared in 1930, as a modification of the guitar itself. The first models generated a very soft and low sound, something quite different from what we know today. To increase the sound power of the instrument, pickups were placed in it (species of tiny microphones). This created a small problem, as these devices made the guitar bulbs vibrate, causing the famous sound change known as feedback. To solve this problem, the famous American musician Les Paul created the massive body of the guitar, which left the instrument in the way we know it today.

The company Rickenbacker started to manufacture the first guitars in 1931. The first electric guitar model to be commercialized was Electro Spanish. However, the main responsible for the mass production and popularization of the instrument was Leo Fender, creator of the traditional guitar manufacturer that bears his surname. Fender has also developed one of the most legendary guitars: the Stratocaster.

The guitar became popular after the Second World War, during the 50s and 60s, a period in which it gained enormous space in the world of music. Today, there are an estimated 50 million guitarists worldwide.
